Amphibians in Sinkhole Ponds & Best Management Practices

Gray Tree Frogs (Hyla versicolor), Scott Ballard, Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Among the loveliest sounds of spring are dusk-to-dawn trillings, peeps, moans, and calls of amphibians. These voices of the night can be heard throughout our bluff lands thanks to the hundreds of sinkhole ponds that pock-mark our karst-formed landscape.

Keeping our sinkhole ponds amphibian-friendly was the subject of research conducted in our area during 2010-2011. The report can be viewed here:

Best Management Practices for Maintaining Sinkhole Ponds as Amphibian Habitat in the Sinkhole Plain of Southwestern Illinois.
